Quick Info for Portofino

Currency: Euro

Language: Italian

Electricity: Most Italian sockets will be three circular holes in vertical row. If this is different to what you use back home, you’ll need a plug converter. Convertors that don’t have the middle prong will be your best choice here so you don’t get stuck for when you come across a two prong socket.

Something important to remember, plug adapters will not convert power, so you may also need a power converter or transformer if your appliance is not configured for 110 volts. This may be the case with some American products (and some other countries may encounter the same issue). The most common products where this will happen are blow-dryers. Consider opting for a hotel with one, or specially seeking out one with dual voltage.

Daily budget: $150+. Although, if you desperately want to visit and can’t afford that, you can do a day trip from Genoa or another nearby town. You could spend around $30-40 if you got around by foot once there, and bought in your own food.  You could also do the same if driving here, but parking is charged hourly so it can add up if you stay too long.

Is Portofino safe?: Portofino is generally a safe place, but an unlucky person could encounter any of the dangers they would back home. Be sensible when swimming in the ocean and don’t wave your valuables around outdoors.

How to get to Portofino: There are no airports in Portofino, but if you want to fly most of the way, you can catch a flight into Genoa. Same with trains, the closest stops are either Genoa or Santa Margherita Ligure (where you’d hop on a connecting bus). The best way to get in from either of these towns though is by ferry or a private boat (if you’re lucky enough to have one).

How to get around: Portofino is a small town so you’ll be able to get around by walking. Alternatively, you can hire a moped to get around faster, especially if you plan on visiting nearby towns. Taxis are expensive here, as are boats, but if you have the means hiring a boat is a picturesque way to experience Portofino and the neighbouring towns.
